STEM CELLS
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are ultimately unspecialised cells that have remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body. In many tissues these stem cells act as a sort of internal repair system, such as in the gut and bone marrow where stem cells regularly divide to repair and replace worn out or damaged tissues. Syndromes and disease are being treated in ways we have never previously thought possible and stem cell treatment is one of the most exciting frontiers of medical science today.
Stem Cell Treatment at Our Clinic
Stem cell injections are an exciting new therapy for treating chronic injuries, including osteoarthritis. Stem cells are sometimes referred to as the “building blocks” of the body and can change into many cells types including cartilage or tendon. The stem cells can potentially become cartilage cells, or tendon cells, and may be able to heal injuries in these tissues.
Stem cell research continues to be at the forefront of human medical science and has developed such that stem cells can be derived from fat from the abdomen. The stem cells are isolated from the fat and may assist in stimulating healing in damaged joints and tendons. The cells isolated include predominantly stem cells, but also other cell types.
The stem cells can be injected into worn joints with osteoarthritis and may assist in regenerating joint surface cartilage and reducing joint inflammation. They may also be used in chronic tendon or muscle injury to assist in possible tissue healing and regeneration.
A scientific study published 2015 by Michalek and other investigators showed dramatic symptom improvement (both in pain and function).
Over 1,000 patients were treated for either knee osteoarthritis or for hip osteoarthritis and it was shown that 1 year after stem cell therapy:
- 63% of patients had improvements of greater than 75%
- 91% of patients had improvements of greater than 50%
Stem cells can potentially treat any musculoskeletal problem, and the areas most likely to be helped by this procedure include:
- Knee Osteoarthritis
- Hip Osteoarthritis
- Ankle Osteoarthritis
- Shoulder Osteoarthritis
- Back pain (including osteoarthritis)
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Patellar tendinopathy
- Elbow tendinopathy (including tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow)
The specialist doctor at the clinic performs the stem cell treatment to treat pain in people of all ages. This treatment can be used to repair the tissue that may have been damaged or severely strained; ligaments, tendons, muscle, bone, cartilage (joints) and the meniscus. The process not only accelerates the healing process but also puts ease on the patient knowing that he/she will treat the pain that is present at a faster rate.
For more information please do not hesitate to contact our clinic, we will be more than welcome to assist you in any queries and ultimately make an appointment for you to consult with the specialist. Bettering your health is our not only our priority but life's ambition.
