What is shockwave?
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive solution for chronic pain in your shoulder, back, heel, knee or elbow. During Shockwave therapy, a high-intensity sound wave interacts with the tissues of the body. This leads to a cascade of beneficial effects such as neovascularisation ingrowth, reversal of chronic inflammation, stimulation of collagen and dissolution of calcium build-up. Stimulation of these biological mechanisms creates an optimal healing environment. As the injured area is returned to normal, functionality is restored and pain is relieved.
Over time, acoustic waves have proven to be an effective and non-invasive method for the treatment of localized musculoskeletal pathology including: epicondylitis, heel spur and plantar fascitis, rotator cuff disorders, trigger points, variety of chronic tendinopathies and many other indications.
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is most frequently used in physiotherapy, orthopaedics and sports medicine.
Applications in physiotherapy are mostly associated with the treatment of chronic muscular and tendon disorders, back and cervical pain and trigger points treatment. Compared to conventional manual and instrumental therapy, SWT is extremelly effective, shortens the treatment period and brings better results in long time follow-up. Most common indications include:
Low back pain
Achilles tendon pain
Trigger points treatment
Orthopaedical applications of shockwaves concentrate on the treatment of calcifications, painful exostoses, various tendonitis and impaired fracture healing. SW therapy brings alternative in many cases when surgical solution seems to be inevitable. Main diagnoses are:
Calcar calcanei/heel spur
Arthrotic changes - secondary symptoms
Lateral & ulnar epicondylitis
Shockwave therapy is very often applied in sports medicine for its soft tissue healing and regenerative effect. Thus the recovery time after injuries can be maximally reduced.
Shockwave therapy is leading the way in pain management. In many instances, there will be an immediate reduction in pain, as well as improved mobility and functionality. This therapy is non-invasive and there is no need for anaesthesia. it is non-addictive and free from side effects. Each treatment session takes approximately 5-10 minutes. Most conditions require just 3 to 5 treatments that are done 3-10 days apart.
Shockwave therapy is non-invasive alternative to surgery and provides fast and effictive help from pain.
